THE PROBLEM

ACCESSIBILITY

Our cities – even the most virtuous ones – do not ease the free mobility of people with any sort of motor disabilities (either permanent, as the case may be of a wheelchaired person, or even temporary, as the case may be of a mom with a stroller, or of a temporarily disabling situation such an accident).

ARCHITECTURAL BARRIERS

In spite of all efforts by Central and Local Administrations, our cities and towns, which were often designed long time ago when these issues were not of public and social concern, are still full of obstacles (architectural barriers), which cannot be overcome by mobility impaired people such as someone in a wheelchair.

Some municipalities in the metropolitan area of Milan have already expressed interest in the project, among them the city of Monza, Bergamo and Trezzo sull’adda and some towns of the Brianza have already adopted by subscribing a contract service for mapping routes 160 in 2 years (Vimercate, Agrate Brianza, Bellusco, Bernareggio, Cavenago Brianza, Concorezzo, Ornago, Usmate Velate).

THE SOLUTION

Goletta Lilla Service’s development phases are two

Territorial Mapping Service (TMS)

A Personal Transporter “Ninebot E” is used by TMS as an optimal means as it effectively allows to recreate the problems encountered by a moving wheeled vehicle (if a Ninebot goes through then a wheelchair will do as well) and is fast enough to cover long distances in short times. The Segway will be suitably equipped with the necessary instruments in order to record all path features such as: ground roughness, climbs, slopes, steps, narrow gangways and sidewalks, high curbs, lack of curbcuts or ramps, gravel walkways, while also allowing the georeferencing of collected data and possibly shooting pictures or films of critical spots in order to give evidence of real problems.

Publication of maps with a reference to optimal and critical paths (MAPS)

The data, after being directly sent to a server from the mobile survey means, shall be processed by using special algorithms that will result in a punctual evaluation of path quality levels and accessibility by people with motor disabilities through a colour code:

green – accessible without problems

yellow – accessible with assistance

red – unaccessible

NINEBOT

Ninebot is the Chinese company, leader in the design and manufacture of personal systems (Personal Transporter) that during the month of may 2015 has acquired completely the Segway company, creator of this historical type of self-balancing transport.
Ninebot turned out to be the best means available to map the architectural barriers, capable of simulating the most of the difficulties that you may encounter such as circulating with a wheelchair.

STM32-NUCLEO

STM has developed this technology inspired by the success of Arduino, with which this architecture maintains hardware compatibility. The project makes use of MEMS sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes) based on the STM research, together with a precision altimeter, GPS location, Bluetooth devices and 4G for connectivity and an ultrasonic system to measure distances. STM32-NUCLEO MCU platform that processes all the detected signals from the Goletta Lilla onboard sensors and transmitted to a cloud-server for creating accessibility maps.

FI-WARE

Fi-WARE is the European ecosystem, born to encourage development of technologies that will fuel the future Internet. All web applications by Goletta Lilla, from the management of collected data to analyzing data algorithms generate attributes that characterize the paths, taking advantage of the APIs of the ecosystem FI-WARE.

E015

E015

All georeferenced data products from Goletta Lilla feed a specific E015 service through which it will be possible for anyone to use its content (critical points and paths) to create new applications that facilitate accessibility to the territories.
E015 is the “digital ecosystem” born from the collaboration between the company “Expo 2015 SpA”, “Confindustria”, “Chamber of Commerce of Milan”, “Confcommercio”, “Assolombarda” and “Unione del Commercio”, with the technical and scientific coordination of CEFRIEL-Politecnico of Milan, for the benefit of all agencies and local businesses.
E015 aims to promote the meeting between demand and supply of goods and services by enterprise system for nationals, not only during the period of preparation and holding of the World Expo, but also for the following years, according to a “coopetitive” model. The E015 Protocol was adopted by Italian National Digital Agenda .

THE BUSINESS MODEL

The business model has two types of customers:

  1. the government entities whom intends to use the mapping of architectural barriers
  2. and all the other people who may be interested in integrating their information systems and their maps with specific information as concerning the real state of accessibility of places in the main urban areas.

In first we will address to the most important European urban areas such as Madrid, London, Paris, Rome, Brussels, Prague, London, Milan, Berlin, etc., which provide a complete mapping of the paths to reach the main points of interest in the territory, “certifying” with a “stretch lilac” paths really accessible to people with mobility difficulties.

They can then take advantage of the information for the proper planning and intervention for the reduction of architectural barriers, and to provide a map service of public utility for its most vulnerable citizens, with enormous social benefits.

The service Goletta lilla essentially provides the following business model:

  • Provision of a mapping service for municipalities involved (surcharge)
  • Publication of static maps via web (free)
  • Provision of an end-user APP with dynamic information and GPS navigation system (by subscription)
  • The subscription to the APP, will be at a symbolic amount and will also allow access to a “thematic” social network where they can share information about accessibility,
  • The social network could be associated to collateral services such as events, places of interest, escort services etc..
  • In addition of this, it is planned to publish maps on channel E015, for anyone who wants to connect their services to a navigation system indicating the”safe” paths (Free)

PLANNING

planningThe information collected may be used by Local Governments to plan urban interventions on the territory aimed at the elimination of architectural barriers and the maintenance necessary to ensure accessibility to points of interest identified.

Luca is the CEO of A10S iTech and the founder and chairman of the business network HUBIT (of which A10SiTech belongs). Luca has thirty years experience in SMEs, where he has always been involved in organizational systems, IT and project management activities. He has participated in important projects in Italy and abroad also collaborating with leading multinational companies. Luca has invented the project Go!Lilla and now he will manage the project to see it finally come true.

Luca will make available its reports in the public administration by promoting the commercial success of the project. Luca is the project manager of Goletta Lilla project.

CLAUDIO CARLENZOLI - CTO A10S iTech

Claudio is a mathematician and he has a deep knowledge of expert systems and artificial intelligence. He since 2012 are involved in strategic project with the others team members.

For twenty years he has specialized in the development of sophisticated web applications by placing a particular focus on all aspects of the user experience that he always considered one of the most important requirements in the creation of a digital application. Since 2013 Claudio started following initiatives FI-WARE considering this strategic platform for the creation of web applications of the future.

In the Go!Lilla project Claudio manages the Team that has the task to develop the web application completely on the FI–WARE platform.

LUCA RODDA - COO A10S iTech

Luca has thirty years experience in embedded systems and real time software development . He has also developed a deep knowledge of government in planning models for mobility and public transport systems , having worked for several years as consultant in the metropolitan area of Milan. For 10 years he has also held the position of deputy mayor with the position of Councillor in charge of Environment , City Planning and Citizen Participation in the city of Trezzo sull’Adda in the metropolitan area of Milan.

Since the beginning of 2014 Luca collaborates with A10S iTech and inspired strategy to join the ecosystem FI-WARE for the development of web applications in new and innovative logic of standardization.

In the Go!Lilla project Luca will realize the Unit of Data Survey (UDS) and the interfaces to the platform FI-WARE.
